About your IP address

A few things worth knowing when you check your connection.

Why is my IP location wrong?

IP location is an estimate based on your network, not GPS. It can point to your provider’s equipment, a nearby city, or a VPN server. Mobile networks often route traffic through another area. A different city does not, by itself, mean something is wrong with your connection.

Why do I only see IPv4 or IPv6?

This page shows the address used to reach this website on this request. Your connection may support both versions, but a single request uses one. Seeing IPv4 here does not prove IPv6 is unavailable, and another website may show a different version.

Is this my device’s IP or my router’s IP?

This is your public address: the one visible to this website. On a typical home IPv4 network, devices share a public address through the router. The private address in your device’s settings is used inside your network. With IPv6, your device may have its own globally routable address.

Can I check whether my VPN changed my IP?

Yes. Copy your current address, connect to your VPN, then reload the page. Compare the new result with the previous address. A change shows that this request used a different address; it is not a full VPN, DNS, or WebRTC leak test, and it does not guarantee anonymity.

Why has my public IP changed?

Many internet providers assign addresses dynamically. Your IP may change when you switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, reconnect your router, or turn a VPN on or off. IPv6 privacy addresses may also rotate. Restarting your router does not guarantee a new IP.

Can someone find my home address from my IP?

A public IP lookup usually reveals an approximate area and network information, not your name or exact street address. Providers can associate addresses with subscriber records, and websites can combine your IP with account data and other signals. Avoid posting your diagnostic summary publicly if you want to keep your connection details private.

Why are some details unavailable?

We only show information supplied with your request. If the hosting platform does not supply a location or a public address, we leave it unavailable. We don’t guess missing details or send your address to another IP lookup service.
